What is your opinion of offering several types of furniture all at one price?

July 31st, 2010 · Dining tables

I run a small furniture retail business is a smaller town and we thinking of changing the store to offer close to 20 sofas at 9, love seats for 9, bedrooms (headboards, dressers, and mirror) for 9, occasional tables (2 end tables and cocktail)all at 9, and dining sets at 9. All will be from the same manufacturer and no in store stock. Some people who have ran this concept have doubled sales, but like I said this will be in a smaller town with several other furniture retailers in town and not near a major metropolis. When I say smaller town, I am comparing to large metro areas like Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, etc. The town has about 10,000 people and about another 20,000-30,000 in the county. What is your opinion of this concept in this type of market?
Fonz, I was not at the market but the owner of the store was. This is the Furnish 1-2-3 concept by Ashley. It already cuts margin very low so making package deals is kinda out. We meet with the reps Wednesday so I was trying to do a little homework so I can see if it is just me that has concerns with this idea.

Matching a brown couch and black tables?

July 31st, 2010 · Coffee Tables

I have a brown couch and recliner (I believe the company calls it "mocha"). My girlfriend has a coffee table that is very modern looking, with glossy black legs, chrome lining, and a glass top. (She also has matching end tables that we may or may not have room for.)

Any suggestions for how to coordinate the two, or coordinate the living room they will share? We are looking for ideas for area rugs, wall art, and throw pillows. Thanks!

what do you think about putting shoes on dining table?

July 30th, 2010 · Dining tables

My housemate likes to put his shoes — soles down — on the kitchen table where we eat. Whatever he has walked in (urban and country streets, with human and animal feces and urine, vomit and other random dirt and bacteria) ends up on the table. He makes fun of me for asking him not to do this and he refuses to keep his shoes off the table. Then he brings up the fact that I set a container of Turpenoid (low-toxicity paint thinner) near the sink once and says it’s exactly the same thing. Note: this was not a leaky or unsafe container, it was the tin in which the product was purchased and it wasn’t getting on anything. This is driving me crazy. Unfortunately I can’t evict him because he is a family member. A husband, as a matter of fact. I feel like wiping the soles of my shoes on his dinner plate before I serve him dinner. Your thoughts?

What looks nicer in a living room in front of your corner couch, a squared coffee table or a round coffee table. Also would it be a glass one or a wooden one.

what color rug that's light goes best with an off-white couch and dark wood tv stand and glass coffee table?

July 28th, 2010 · Coffee Tables

I am having such a hard time finding a rug for my small studio apartment! I have white walls, an off-white/very light creme colored modern leather couch, a glass coffee table (smart coffee table-cb2) and a dark wood tv console. I just purchased a small dining table which is basically next to my tv console and it is also dark wood. I wanted to keep the entire room light but after an impulsive buy, I realize that the dining table definitely darked the room by a lot. Would using a white area rug clash with the off-white couch? I was also thinking of a light taupe colored rug that I think might match better but I want a color as light as possible. Would white be bad, aside from difficulties in maintenance?
Last question, in a small room, would a dark wood tv console, dark wood dining table and a dark wood entryway console table be too much dark wood?
Thanks a lot!

Help! Trouble with my boyfriend! Do you think it will help by mentioning prenuptial agreement?

July 27th, 2010 · Dining tables

I am a middle aged woman. I have gone off an abusive relationship years ago and are now dating. I met this guy, who is much more politer and gentler than my ex, I wished to live with him for the entire of my life until some of his habits start to bother me. First, I understood that his life habit is not because he is anything less than a good person; but because of his poor childhood, he cared about his money very much, too much, even. He doesn’t like the idea of spend money, he would do anything to save money, and he does this to his son(he had a marriage before), to himself, and to everyone live with him. He is the kind of person who would be unhappy at you for opening a second bottle of cooking oil when there is still some left in his first. He thus spends most of his free time calculating how to spend the least amount of money, or even not spend money. For example, he lived in another state, and each time he needs a ticket in order to come to my home, he would register a credit card then cancel it just for the ticket money.
Since both of us are divorced before and have our children, this situation worsens as he tries to spend the least money possible, only buy me gifts that equals to the same value or less of the gift I had bought him before. I understood that he needs to save money for his daughter, but it really start to bother me, as I could never trust him since he is always calculating. There was one time when he help me clean my house while I went to work [10+ hours]. He gotten unhappy with me because one day, without my knowledge, he went to a store to buy some cleaning supply [], and I didn’t give him the money fast enough when I came home exhausted. It is not like I am not going to give back to him, I am, either in the form of money or buy him something he really wants or could use as a gift that would be more than what he spent.
I really don’t care about money, but since he is always calculating, I feel that I am at a disadvantage if I don’t.
His calculations, in the beginning, is ignorable; but they slowly build up and start to really annoy me and disinterest in him. But every time I have a problem, I would still longing for his advices. I really don’t know what should I do: quit or continue.
Also, do you think mentioning to him prenuptial agreement would help this situation?
I am thinking of making him something like this: whatever I earned or saved is mine and whatever he earned is his, our property remain separated throughout marriage and will be pass down only to our own children, and whatever shared property we have, such as a dining table or a TV set, we split it half and half. BTW he has more savings but I earn more money, so if split the shared property in half, he is definitely not losing any money.
btw. I am sure he is aware of his habit; he has a better name for it, but these names describes essentially the same thing
he is a boyfriend now. I was planning. but this behavior bothers me now. I am wondering if the agreement would help his obsession with money
thanks all of you
and ilovepib…
I earn 6 figure, he earns close to mine

Do you like my newt poem?

July 24th, 2010 · Dining tables

*****
One candle’s light is a solitary glimmer
Two candles lit form a union of one
Three candle sets finish sweet dining tables
Four candles held by the choir

Five candles light up a room enough to see
Six candles mark the way upstairs
Seven candles honor the glory of the Temple
Eight candles make a ring of fire

Twenty candle power is needed for beaming
Hundreds of candles seen for miles
Thousands of candles steer the ships at sea
A million candle fire has never been seen

So, I’m alight, a solitary candle
A small dancing flame, a slow burning fire
I wait to be joined by the rest in conflagration
Caught in the inferno, inspired

*****

Might I be suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder? (O.C.D.)?

July 23rd, 2010 · Dining tables

I have a few O.C.D. symptoms, and I freak out a lot about it, but my mom reckons I’m just some mad control freak. Help.

I HAVE to rewrite the shopping list my dad writes so it is categorized, and that it’s neat.
I need to know exactly what time events are going to end, where exactly we’re going, who else is going, otherwise I’ll just sit there anxiously, my head spinning slightly.
I have to turn off the shower when I wash my hair/body. Now that’s saving water, my family has nothing against that tendency. :)
I have to write on every second page in my exercise books so that the pen lines aren’t creasing the back of the pages. Again, I waste paper BUT I CAN’T EFFING HELP IT. Which leads me to my next tendency; if I’m not feeling well (but still at school … say, if I have my period – which I get the worst pains for and have headaches/cramps etc -), I’ll write in lead pencil messily, and then when I’m feeling better, I’ll rub it out and re-write it all in pen so it’s neat. Oh, and if I make a huge mistake on my page (e.g. paragraph misinterpretation), I’ll rip out the page and start on a new page. Neatly.
I also have to turn off the lights in the house, if people aren’t using that room, which includes the hallway. Oh yeah, I’m the least-liked in my family. D:
I spend my weekends re-categorizing the DVDs and the CDs in genres, alphabetical order, etc.
I can’t let anyone set up the dining table, because I have to do it in my own way.
I can’t let anyone borrow my stuff at school, or even at home. I freak that it might get lost.
I feel like I’m not ready to start driving because I’m scared I’ll kill either myself or someone else.
If I lose something (I recently ‘lost’ my watch), I freak out completely, and am a complete mess for the whole time period, until someone reassures me they’ll get a replacement for it.
My Harry Potter books are always re-organized in chronological order on my shelf, and I have to have duplicates of each book. (Only the Harry Potter series, not my other books). I fear I may lose one copy, and not have one of the Harry Potter books.
Oh, and I usually sanitize my hands when I’m out.

And that’s not all … I have other weird, neurotic habits, but … is it possible I suffer from O.C.D.? Or am I just a control freak? Thanks. :)
