How do I paint over rock?

January 22nd, 2012 · Dining tables

I just bought a dining room table, a coffee table & 2 end tables. The bases of these are made out of some type of rock/stone stuff and I would really like to paint over this because Im not a huge fan of the color. Does anyone know if this is possible without it looking cheesy or tacky? I was thinking maybe spray paint? I just don’t want to paint it and then have a ruined living room/dining room set.

What colors go well with white walls, black and glass coffee and end tables, and chocolate brown couches?

January 3rd, 2012 · Coffee Tables

I am coming home from Afghanistan and settling in with my long time girlfriend. All of my current furniture is dark in color, such as two chocolate brown couches, black and glass coffee tables and end tables, and black and glass hightop kitchen table. I also have a black 51" plasma and tv stand. I really wanted to brighten up the living room for her when I get home. On the wall will be a folded triangle flag enboxed with the blue and white star side showing. I was thinking maybe a theme with red curtains or blues, like blue pillows for the couches… She will be designing her touches on the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom while I am still deployed. I appreciate the help.

Furnishing a house.. colours?

December 30th, 2011 · Dining tables

We’ll be moving into our new house soon and I’ve been looking at furniture for the dining and lounge room.
I REALLY like white. I wanted to get a white dining table, white coffee table, and white tv stand, But I dont know if that will be too much white???
I was also wanting to get a white leather bed with white side tables.
Will this be too much white going on??
Will it look stupid if I have a white dining table set and then like a black coffee table or something???
So confusing

Roman/Classic Style Decorating tips?

September 12th, 2011 · Coffee Tables

I’m getting a little studio apartment (starting small…) but I want a Greek/Roman Classical style for the prevailing theme. My 2 sofas, couch and Ottoman is a nice burnt red color, and have clean, definite lines, along with a definite arch on the arms. I have a glass top coffee table, and accent table of the same set. What else can I do/buy to kind of play up the classical theme?

Thanks!

Does it sound like I'm being too anal or do I have a right to be upset?

September 11th, 2011 · Coffee Tables

My brother inlaw, his girlfriend, their nine month old daughter, his 10-year old daughter from a previous relationship, and his girlfriend’s 13-year old sister came to visit us on Saturday night. When they called I really wasn’t in the mood to be bothered with them, but my husband told them we’d be at home and invited them over so I didn’t want to go against the grain.

My eldest niece usually comes with my inlaws (as she spends a lot of time with them) and she has some behavioral issues. We have just recently started spending more time around the nine month old and although she is as cute as a button she is a terror. She gets into EVERYTHING. She recently started walking so she can really get to where she needs to go. This is only her third time coming to our house but she makes me a nervous wreck.

She goes from one thing to another. From the TV cabinet that we have our flat screen sitting on to the end tables to the coffee table to the kitchen table. Her parents will only get her attention if they feel she’s in danger. I feel she’s putting herself at danger the entire time. We do not have kid friendly furniture at all. Our furniture is very heavy with lots of carvings, solid wood and marble in the living room. We have a rectangular glass table in the kitchen with sharp corners.

We have to leave the doors on the TV stand open in order to change the channel but the little one kept messing with the doors, swiging them back and forth and I was so afraid she was going to smash her fingers. She kept trying to push the buttons on the DVR and the other electronic devices. Her mother finally said something and got up and went to remove her from the area but she eventually made her way back. Then she was crawling on the kitchen floor and I was so afraid she’d bump her head on the glass table.

Me and my brother inlaw’s girlfriend left to go to the store. The two younger kids stayed there with my husband and his brother. When I got back and tried to change the channel it wouldn’t work. I kept trying to figure out what the problem was. Come to find out the little button that clicks between TV, Audio 1, Audio 2, and Satellite had been broken. Instead of clicking between modes the button now just glides across and the remote doesn’t work.

Also, later the baby wasted some of the soda (yes, they give her Mr. Pibb and other sodas) from her sippy cup. It was quite a bit. The 13-year old asked for something to wipe it up with and then the baby threw up in the same spot. They wiped that up. About 30 minutes later she wasted more soda on the carpet and the baby’s mother insisted her 13-year old sister clean that spill up as well. The sister refused. They went back and forth arguing for about three minutes. Nobody made a move so I got up and went over there to see what was on the floor, but I think it was spilled on our rug and had soaked in by then. Needless to say I was very agitated.

My brother inlaw’s girlfriend is 21 and he is 38. She is very immature and thinks it’s cute that her daughter is "so bad" as she calls it. The baby was crawling all onto the couch with her shoes on, playing with her keys and putting them in her mouth. For a minute I was afraid she’d stab the leather sofa with the keys because they really don’t say anything to her until the last minute. It’s almost like they’re exhausted with paying attention to her.

We are actually expecting our first child in four to five weeks. I realize babies are curious and will get into everything, but I have plenty of family members who have little ones and they just don’t let their child go ape wild like that when at others homes.

Am I being unreasonable? The 10-year old’s behavior is another story that I won’t even get into. I admit, I’m not used to being around kids on a regular basis …
Jeni – we will be baby proofing our furniture but exchanging it is not an option at all. We paid quite a bit for it. Again, I realize babies do need to explore but I would never allow my baby to do the things they allow theirs to do at someone elses home. I think what it boils down to is she is so used to do whatever at their house. I have never visited their home but they have shared pictures with us of her climbing on top of their headboard. They think it’s funny. Also, I don’t think they have very much furniture in their apartment so there’s probably lots of room for her to play. Either way, we will do what we can to make it safe for our baby once he starts crawling around (like putting guards on the corners of the tables and installing gates near the kitchen entrances), but this little girl is all over the place … and it’s like they just don’t feel like saying anything until she’s about to bust her skull open on the table.

What color to paint living room walls?

September 9th, 2011 · Coffee Tables

I have hard wood floors (generic color, not too dark), black leather couch, love seat, recliner. Black coffee table with silver legs, silver lamps, black tv with a black glass tv stand, and will have a black frame with glass dining table (the living room has an extension that turns into a small dining room area)

My accent wall will be red/maroon as I have that paint already and I want to paint all the other walls with something that will look good. I have to make a decision by tonight.

Thanks.

Why does a milk glass stick to the table?

September 6th, 2011 · Coffee Tables

Funny question, right? But, after I drink a glass of milk, when I place the mostly empty glass on a magazine or my coffee table, it always sticks to the surface (after some times passes). My water glasses sweat, but never stick.

Can anyone provide an explanation to this phenomenon?

applying a clear coat to my dining room set?

September 4th, 2011 · Dining tables

I painted my dining room set black and was worried about it getting damaged from wear (especially the table top and chairs). Someone told me to put a clear coat over top to protect it, so I started putting it on and it looks blue and lathered up, looking like soap suds all over the first chair I’m doing. I wiped it off and started again, being really gentle with it, but it still lathered up. Are these blue bubbles normal and will they dry clear or did I just ruin like a months worth of painting?

Would light wood cabinets clash with a dark dining rom table set?

September 2nd, 2011 · Dining tables

I’m thinking of buying a house but I need new cabinets. I don’t like dark cabinets and wanted a light colored wood for them. The dining room is in a separate room but is visible from the kitchen. I wanted a light tan brown on the walls with light colored cabinets. But in the dining room I would love a dark wood dining room table set with a dark wine red color on the walls. Would this clash and look terrible. Or would it look pretty? Also the breakfast room is separate from the kitchen but it is very much so visible from the kitchen. What should I do about a table for in there. It is completely open to the kitchen but still in a separate room. Its strange.

Solutions for dining room chairs?

August 31st, 2011 · Dining tables

I bought a dining set out of the penny-saver several years ago but it only came with 4 chairs. It hasn’t been a problem because I didn’t like to entertain before but now I do and I can’t find any chairs to match the existing ones. It’s cherry wood and traditional looking and I’m planning on going with the country theme in the room when I paint it. We also always leave the leaf in it (the table is 7 X 3.5 ‘). Painting it is not an option. And neither is buying a brand new dining set.

How do I tell my friends to discipline their kids in my house?

August 29th, 2011 · Coffee Tables

I have two friends that come over to my house a lot, one has a 18 month old and the other has 2 year old twins. I have a nice house and nice things, but when my friends come over I’m on edge with my decor that’s on the end tables and coffee table. I’m afraid that one day my things are going to end up broken. One friend takes everything off the coffee table and puts it up. I get a little up set because they should discipline there kids and tell them no, not move the stuff. And then they let the kids play on the glass table with toys, I’ve told the kids no. My 2 year old knows not to touch things on the tables but when the other kids get around she start too. How do I tell my friends to discipline there kids and not move my decor. Also they let there kids drink and eat food while walking around. I’ve have told both of them that the kids need to eat & drink at the table, they do it once or twice and that’s it. And I feel like my daughter is starting to act like there kids. My friend with the twins has even mentioned that her kids are a bad influence on my daughter. I’ve held my tongue for a while about this but I’m getting to my breaking point. Advice?

I am in need of Decorating Tips?

August 28th, 2011 · Coffee Tables

We are moving to our dream home next month, however I am NOT a decorator and I am tired of being plain Jane. Here are my issues: 1) Main living room has sage walls (which are fine) and we have chocolate brown leather furniture, what color coffee/side tables would accent this room? Also what color should my accent pieces be? 2) My formal dining room is visible from the main living room (do not remember what color the walls are) should our dining table be consistent with the same color of wood that our coffee tables will be or can I decorate the rooms seperately? My problem is that I do not want to necessarily use the same color wood in every room, unless it will flow easier, but I want the home to be comfortable. We have small children so I want to avoid glass tables, however glass on top of the wood would work for the dining table. I am looking at picking some pieces from IKEA as they are affordable and we are on a budget. Any ideas or suggestions you can offer would be GREAT. Thanks.
